On the day of immersion, all idols, along with their apparel, are immersed in water mostly in the sacred river Ganges. On the other hand, Ganesha Utsav (Festival of Lord Ganesha, popularly known as "Elephant God" in western culture) is celebrated with pomp and grandeur for 10 to 12 days in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra.

They immerse all size idols, big ones, and small ones, already water in rivers is very polluted around most of the cities and this immersion process makes it more dirty and contaminated. Hence arises the prime question on why exactly the god and goddesses are immersed in water and what exactly is the significance of a Visarjan. The whole essence of Ganpati Visarjan is based on the philosophy of the Earth balancing the power and energy of Lord Ganesha to even out the universe.

Since the idols are made from Plaster of Paris these are nonbiodegradable naturally and so these continue to float on the water for a long time thereby choking the water bodies and adversely impacting aquatic ecosystem.
